Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about EMDR Intensives (clients) and Consultation (Clinicians). If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out.

Where are you located and how do sessions take place?
Beneath the Surface Therapy offers in-person sessions in La Quinta, California and secure telehealth sessions for clients anywhere in California (when clinically appropriate).
What is an EMDR intensive?
An EMDR intensive is a focused, accelerated therapy format that concentrates the work into longer sessions across fewer days. It’s designed for people who want meaningful movement without a long weekly timeline—while still keeping pacing, regulation, and integration clinically structured.
What do you help with?
EMDR intensives are often a good fit for clients experiencing:
  • Persistent rumination or intrusive replay
  • Trauma-bonded relationship patterns that feel difficult to exit
  • Irrational fears you understand logically but can’t control emotionally
  • Cumulative stress, burnout, and identity erosion in high-responsibility roles
  • Grief, betrayal, moral injury, and difficult experiences that still activate the nervous system
How do I get started?
Start by booking a free 15-minute intensive call. We’ll clarify what you want to address, confirm fit, and determine the best container (3-hour, 5-hour, or 3-day).
What are your rates for EMDR intensives?
Intensives are billed at $225 per hour.
  • 3-Hour Intensive: $675
  • 5-Hour Intensive: $1,125
  • 3-Day Intensive (5 hours/day): $3,375
Optional: 10-Session Package (50-minute sessions) — $2,000 (includes $250 savings)
Do you accept insurance?
EMDR intensives are private pay and are not billed to insurance.

For standard psychotherapy sessions (limited availability), Beneath the Surface Therapy is currently credentialed with:
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Magellan Health
  • Cigna / Evernorth
  • Medi-Cal
Do I need a diagnosis to work with you?
If you are working privately and not seeking insurance reimbursement, a diagnosis is not required. If you request documentation for insurance-related purposes, your plan may require a diagnosis code. Please check with your provider for their requirements.
Can I use HSA/FSA funds?
In many cases, yes. Many clients use HSA/FSA funds for therapy. Please confirm eligibility with your plan administrator.
Do I need to be in California to work with you?
Yes. For psychotherapy/EMDR services, you must be physically located in California at the time of each session due to licensure regulations.
What is Consultation (Clinicians)?
Consultation is a professional support container for EMDR-trained clinicians seeking help with fidelity, case conceptualization, target sequencing, stuck points, and safe modifications.

Consultation is not clinical supervision. Consultees retain full responsibility for clinical decisions, documentation, and case management. Please present de-identified case material only.
How do I start consultation?
Submit a consultation request. If it’s a fit, you’ll receive an invitation to schedule a Fit Call and discuss the best consultation format (individual or group).
